War, Identity, Truth and Love: Leonhard Frank's Karl und Anna

Brian Murdoch1

1 German Department, Stirling University, Stirling FK9 4LA, Scotland, United Kingdom

Leonhard Frank's Karl und Anna has ancient and modern antecedents, and is particularly comparable with the tale of Martin Guerre. It differs in its reflection of the First World War, in the active role of the wife, and especially in the way in which the characters recreate a new past.
