Shipwrecks of Modernity: Abel Posse's El Largo Atardecer del Caminante

Kerstin Bowsher1

This article argues that Abel Posse's novel El largo atardecer del caminante constructs a postcolonial critique of the idea of Modernity as liberating project. Drawing on work by Enrique Dussel, Eduardo Galeano, and Michel de Certeau, I explore Posse's characterisation and subsequent rejection of Modernity, particularly its root in colonial ideology and links with historical discourse. I also highlight a common concern of these authors to inscribe and vindicate silenced protagonists of Latin American history.
