The Legacy of the Baroque in the Novels of Joseph Roth
Pembroke College, Cambridge, CB2 1RF, United Kingdom
Joseph Roth's later fiction displays several aspects of the Baroque heritage, a feature of his writing which has been repeatedly underestimated. The novels Radetzkymarsch and Die Kapuzinergruft display the themes of memento mori, vanitas, Irrgang, ordo and ratio, as well as structural similarities with literary works of that period. This influence is ultimately ascribed to Roth's fascination with the Habsburg monarchy and to his attempt to impose order onto a post-Habsburg world experienced as chaotic.
